£154.4 m Ghana/Cote d'Ivoire Inter-connectivity project to enhance regional electricity trade-GRIDCo CEO

The Chief Executive of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), Ing. Mark Baah, has affirmed that the ongoing Ghana/Côte d’Ivoire Interconnectivity Project will play a critical role in enhancing regional power generation and electricity trade across West Africa.
Speaking at a three-day Interconnection Reinforcement Project meeting held in Accra on Wednesday, Ing. Baah highlighted the strategic importance of the project within the framework of the ECOWAS regional energy agenda.
“The project is regarded as a priority under the ECOWAS Master Plan for the Development of Regional Power Generation and Transmission Infrastructure (2019–2033), which was adopted by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government on December 22, 2018,” he stated.
Ing. Baah noted that while the regional electricity market initiative aims to deepen power trade among West African countries, studies from the ECOWAS Master Plan indicate that the current interconnection capacity could become a bottleneck if not upgraded.
The project, he said, is therefore essential to removing those constraints and facilitating smooth cross-border electricity exchange.
On behalf of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Chief Director Mr. Solomon Adjetey Sowah reiterated the government’s commitment to the initiative.
He announced that the Ministry is prepared to formalise its role by signing key legal instruments to guide the project’s execution.
“These instruments will not only support the implementation of the project but also establish a robust framework for cooperation that is built on mutual trust, transparency, and shared responsibility,” Mr. Sowah explained.
