The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced an urgent meeting with Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs) amid a worrying surge in mobile money fraud across Ghana.

 Mr. George expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of digital financial crimes, describing the trend as “unacceptable.”

“I have summoned all EMIs to a meeting this week to demand answers and clear strategies to protect consumers,” he revealed.

“The meeting was initially scheduled for Thursday, but the operators requested a rescheduling to take place after the Easter break.”

The Minister made it clear that the government would not allow criminals to exploit the digital space and rob Ghanaians of their hard-earned money.

The planned meeting, he said, will focus on accountability, the implementation of stronger user protection protocols, and strict enforcement of digital security standards among service providers.

“There will be consequences for platforms that are not doing enough to safeguard the funds of their users,” Mr. George warned.

He further disclosed that the government is considering regulatory reforms to tighten controls within the digital payments sector.

“We are reviewing the regulatory environment, and if it means amending laws to compel stricter compliance, we will not hesitate,” he stated.

Mr. George also encouraged mobile money users to be proactive in protecting themselves from fraud.

“While the government is doing its part, users must also protect themselves by being cautious and informed,” he advised, urging the public to report suspicious activity immediately.
