ECG disconnects power supply to GBC over unpaid bills

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected the power supply to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), the state-owned operator of GTV, GTV Sports+, and several other television and radio stations, over non-payment of accumulated electricity bills.
The disconnection exercise, carried out on Tuesday morning, forms part of ECG’s ongoing nationwide revenue mobilisation campaign aimed at retrieving outstanding debts owed by government institutions, private businesses, and residential customers.
Sources within ECG confirmed that GBC has been in arrears for several months, despite repeated notices and reminders.
The exact amount owed has not yet been officially disclosed, but ECG officials have described it as “significant.”
The blackout has disrupted operations at GBC’s studios and transmission centres, raising concerns among staff and viewers about the continuity of broadcasting services.
“This is not a decision we take lightly,” an ECG official said.
“We’ve had numerous engagements with GBC to settle their debts, but the Corporation has failed to honour its obligations.
As a result, we had no choice but to take this action.”
Attempts to reach GBC management for a response have so far been unsuccessful.
However, staff at the Corporation described the situation as dire, warning that prolonged disconnection could cripple the national broadcaster’s ability to function.
The move has sparked public debate, with many questioning how a key national institution like GBC could fall into such financial difficulty. Others have called on the government to intervene and ensure the broadcaster is able to resume operations without delay.
This development is the latest in a series of disconnections by ECG, as the company intensifies efforts to recover debts and improve operational efficiency.
