Electrical contractors call for direct government contracts to improve public safety
The Ghana Electrical Contractors Association (GECA) is urging the government to award its certified members direct contracts for electrical wiring in public facilities, arguing that the current system compromises safety standards.
According to GECA, although it is a government-certified professional body, its members are frequently sidelined in the contracting process, leaving electrical works in the hands of non-specialists.
The Association says this has contributed to recurring fire outbreaks in government buildings, which are often wrongly blamed on GECA.
To curb these risks, the Association wants electrical wiring contracts to be separated from main building contracts and assigned exclusively to certified professionals.
Speaking during a health walk in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of GECA, Devine Osei Mintah, said awarding the specialised work directly to GECA members will help improve quality and safety in public infrastructure.
Echoing this call, Regional Secretary Samuel Oduro Kwarteng stressed that proper adherence to standards can only be guaranteed if certified professionals fully handle electrical installations in state-owned facilities.
GECA believes the move will not only reduce fire incidents but also uphold safety regulations and ensure accountability in the execution of electrical works across the country.
