GFL calls for decisive leadership at GWL amid rollout of 24-hour economy agenda
The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has expressed concern over persistent water shortages in parts of the country, cautioning that the situation could derail the government’s 24-hour economy industrialisation drive.
According to the veteran trade unionist, an unreliable water supply poses a significant threat to productivity, especially for industries expected to operate continuously under the flagship policy.
Speaking on Ahotor FM on Saturday, February 28, Mr. Koomson called for decisive leadership at Ghana Water Limited (GWL), insisting that management must be held accountable for performance targets.
“If the Managing Director is not meeting his targets, then he should be changed,” he stated.
The current Acting Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, was appointed in early 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama.
As of February 2026, Mr. Mutawakilu has faced mounting criticism over ongoing water shortages, particularly in Accra.
He has attributed the crisis to a mix of operational and supply challenges.
However, Mr. Koomson maintains that the circumstances demand urgent solutions rather than explanations.
He emphasised that workers and businesses cannot afford production losses due to inconsistent water supply, warning that prolonged disruptions could weaken industrial output and frustrate the broader objectives of the 24-hour economy policy.
Mr. Koomson therefore urged the government to prioritise practical interventions and ensure that leadership at Ghana Water Limited delivers measurable results in line with national development goals.
