It took NLA 9 years to generate GHS 3.065 billion -Razak Kojo Opoku to Fourth Estate

A former Public Relations Manager of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, has strongly denied claims made by The Fourth Estate that the NLA awarded a GHS 3 billion business deal to KGL.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Okay FM’s Morning Show on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Dr. Opoku described the report as “factually incorrect and misleading.”
He emphasised that the NLA has never generated GHS 3 billion annually, making it impossible for the authority to have handed over a GHS 3 billion business to KGL.
“It is totally untrue and sinister for anyone to suggest that NLA gave away a GHS 3 billion business. The NLA does not even generate that amount annually,” he stated.
Dr. Opoku accused The Fourth Estate of engaging in what he called “Jandam journalism,” claiming the outlet failed to verify facts from the NLA’s financial records before publishing the story.
He suggested the publication was intended to create public disaffection toward KGL.
Providing a breakdown of NLA’s performance, Dr. Opoku said the Authority’s total revenue from 2017 to 2020 was approximately GHS 1.47 billion, with corresponding expenditure of GHS 1.385 billion.
According to him, historical data show that between 2012 and 2016, NLA’s annual revenues ranged between GHS 242, 369, 218.42 and GHS 402, 477, 997.28 and the Authority NEVER made even GHS 500,000, 000.00 in a single year within that period.
“When the figures show clearly that NLA has never generated GHS 3 billion, it beats logic for any media organisation to make such a claim,” he stressed.
Dr. Opoku further clarified that the arrangement between KGL and NLA is a licensing agreement, not a procurement contract.
He explained that the partnership allows KGL to operate under NLA’s supervision to help maximise revenue, a collaboration that has spanned about seven years.
“It’s a license agreement, not a contract. It doesn’t fall under procurement.
KGL has worked with NLA for seven years to enhance revenue generation,” he said.
He urged media organisations to uphold professionalism by cross-checking facts before publication to avoid misleading the public and tarnishing reputations.
