Country music legend Dolly Parton died on Tuesday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.   The American music icon was 80 years old.

Parton had been admitted to the hospital on Aug 21 after spending several months dealing with health issues. A specific cause of death has not been released.

Her family announced that, per her wishes, she will be buried during a small, private service for immediate family members. Her nephew shared that she expressed a wish to be buried in a "bed of plush cotton." In lieu of flowers, her family requested donations be made to her literacy program, the Imagination Library.

Following her passing, tributes poured in from across the music and entertainment industry, including co-stars Julia Roberts and Sally Field, and musicians George Strait, Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban, and Pink. President Donald Trump ordered American flags throughout the United States to be lowered to half-staff for one week in her honor.

Born Jan. 19, 1946, in East Tennessee, Parton built a career spanning over six decades as a singer, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. She was known for hits such as Jolene, 9 to 5, and I Will Always Love You, starring roles in films like Steel Magnolias and 9 to 5, and for founding the Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
