As part of efforts to promote safe sex practices and prevent the spread of HIV, the Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET) has distributed condoms and other protective materials to individuals across the country ahead of the celebration of Valentine’s Day.
Speaking on the initiative, GHANET President, Mr. Ernest Amoabeng Oteng, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about safe sex as people celebrate love and intimacy on February 14.
''Our goal is to ensure that people are aware of the risks of unprotected sex and have access to the necessary protection to prevent new HIV infections,” he stated.
The distribution exercise was part of a broader campaign to support Ghana’s efforts in achieving the global target of eradicating HIV by 2030. GHANET’s strategy focuses on education, awareness, and access to prevention tools, particularly among high-risk groups.
By providing these resources, the organization hopes to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their sexual health while reducing the risk of HIV transmission.
The initiative aligns with Ghana’s national strategy to combat HIV and contributes to the global goal of ending the epidemic within the decade.
Vanessa Mensah, a member of GHANET, urged the public not to use the occasion as an excuse for casual sex, but rather as an opportunity to express genuine love and care for one another.
“Valentine’s Day should be about love, not just intimacy.
We encourage responsible behaviour to protect yourself and others,” she advised.
GHANET remains committed to HIV prevention efforts and will continue to implement awareness programs to support Ghana’s fight against the disease.
