Europe's heatwave is no longer just a weather story — it's becoming an economic emergency
Europe is warming faster than any other continent, and this summer's heatwave is highlighting the growing human and economic costs of climate change. Rising death tolls, widespread wildfires, and increasing pressure on healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and energy systems demonstrate that extreme heat has become not only an environmental issue but also a significant economic challenge.
During June and July, temperatures exceeded 40°C in parts of France, Germany, Spain, and Italy, fuelling drought, wildfires, and widespread disruption. The late-June heatwave disrupted power supplies, forced school closures, and shattered temperature records across France, Spain, and the United Kingdom. According to EuroMOMO, a mortality monitoring network supported by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 10,000 excess deaths were recorded across Europe, with over 9,000 occurring among people aged 65 and above, highlighting the disproportionate impact of extreme heat on older populations.
According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Europe is warming at approximately twice the global average, making it the world's fastest-warming continent. Scientists primarily attribute this trend to human-induced climate change, reinforced by persistent heat domes, changes in the jet stream, and prolonged drought, all of which reduce the land's natural ability to cool itself through evaporation.
The consequences extend well beyond the immediate effects of extreme heat. Low river levels have disrupted inland shipping, while unusually warm river water has reduced electricity generation at nuclear power plants that depend on it for cooling. Dry forests and farmland have also significantly increased the risk of wildfires across Spain, Greece, and parts of Germany.
The economic impact is becoming increasingly evident. Lower crop yields, higher transportation costs, more hazardous working conditions, and rising demand for air conditioning are placing an increasing financial burden on households, businesses, and governments. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that more frequent climate-related extreme weather events could reduce Europe's annual GDP growth by up to 1 percentage point, strengthening the case for greater investment in climate resilience and adaptation.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged governments to strengthen heat action plans, protect vulnerable populations, expand access to cooling centres, and improve early warning systems to reduce the health risks associated with extreme heat.
Europe's latest heatwave illustrates how climate change is reshaping public health, infrastructure, and economic activity. As extreme heat becomes more frequent and intense, the focus is shifting from emergency response to long-term adaptation and resilience. The decisions governments make today will play a crucial role in protecting lives, strengthening economies, and preparing communities for a warmer future.
