MEDIA ENGAGEMENT BY THE GENERAL SECRETARY, HON. FIFI FIAVI KWETEY, ON ACTIVITIES MARKING NDC MONTH – JUNE 2026
FRIDAY, 15TH MAY 2026
NDC HEADQUARTERS, ADABRAKA – ACCRA
Fellow countrymen and women,
Comrades of the National Democratic Congress,
Members of the media,
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
Good afternoon.
On behalf of the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), I warmly welcome you all to this important media encounter convened to officially announce activities marking the NDC Month of June 2026.
The National Democratic Congress has declared the month of June every year as NDC Month, a period dedicated to reflection, remembrance, recommitment and renewal of the ideals that gave birth to our great Party and continue to shape our collective political tradition.
The observance of this year’s NDC Month begins today, the 15th of May 2026, a date of profound historical significance.
May 15 represents an important precursor moment in the political evolution that birthed the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and subsequently the National Democratic Congress.
It is therefore fitting that we commence this national observance from today, as we retrace the path of sacrifice, patriotism, accountability and social justice that has defined our political tradition.
This year’s theme, “Strengthening State Institutions: Lessons from the June 4, 1979 Uprising,” speaks directly to the current aspirations of our nation and the urgent task of national renewal.
The June 4 uprising was not merely an event in history. It represented a demand for integrity in public life, accountability in governance, discipline in leadership, social equity and responsible stewardship of state resources. Those ideals remain relevant today and continue to inspire the mission of the NDC government under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.
Indeed, the ongoing Reset Agenda being pursued by the government seeks to restore confidence in public institutions, rebuild national trust, strengthen democratic governance, deepen transparency and reposition the state machinery to serve the ordinary Ghanaian better. The principles of probity, accountability, inclusiveness and people-centered governance, which formed the moral foundation of June 4, are therefore inseparable from the broader national reset agenda currently underway.
As we commemorate this important period in our history, we also pay glowing tribute to the Founder of the National Democratic Congress and the first President of the Fourth Republic under the 1992 Constitution, His Excellency President Jerry John Rawlings. His courage, patriotism, commitment to probity and accountability, and immense contribution to Ghana’s democratic development remain deeply etched in the history of our nation. President Rawlings devoted his life to the empowerment of ordinary Ghanaians, the strengthening of democratic governance and the pursuit of social justice. His legacy continues to inspire generations within the NDC and beyond, and this year’s observance provides yet another opportunity to honour his enduring vision for Ghana.
Throughout June, the Party, in collaboration with cadres, sympathizers, traditional authorities, community leaders, youth groups and civil society actors, will undertake a series of commemorative, educational and patriotic activities across the country. Seasoned personalities, distinguished politicians, cadres, historians and individuals with direct knowledge of, or association with, the aforementioned historical events will be invited to address participants and share valuable perspectives and experiences to enrich public understanding of the significance of the June 4 uprising and the evolution of the NDC tradition.
i. On June 3, a major public lecture will be held in the Banda Constituency focusing on the historical impact of the June 4 uprising, the role of state institutions in accountable governance, and the local significance of the events of June 4 to the people of the area.
ii. On June 4 itself, there shall be a ceremonial flag raising, wreath laying, lighting of the perpetual flame and a grand durbar involving chiefs and people of the Bono Region. This event will symbolize remembrance, national unity, and our enduring commitment to responsible governance and democratic accountability.
iii. June 10 will be observed as NDC Day, with activities centered on revisiting the ideological foundations of the Party and reinforcing participation in democratic governance, especially among women and the youth.
iv. On June 19, Cadres Day will be commemorated in Kumasi under the theme: “Ensuring Transparent Governance: The Role of Cadres.” This important gathering will provide an opportunity to reflect on the responsibility of cadres and activists in safeguarding democratic accountability, national integrity and grassroots political organization.
v. Finally, on June 22, the Party will commemorate Founder’s Day with activities including the naming of the Party headquarters after the Founder, His Excellency President Jerry John Rawlings, the unveiling of his bust in recognition of his immense contribution to the establishment and growth of the Party, and a celebration of his enduring legacy and contribution to Ghana’s democratic journey.
Comrades and friends,
These activities are not intended merely as ceremonial observances.
They are opportunities for political education, national reflection, and patriotic renewal.
They are intended to reconnect, especially the younger generation, to the historical struggles that shaped our democracy and the values that must continue to guide national leadership.
We therefore call on all members of the National Democratic Congress, cadres, activists, sympathizers, and well-meaning Ghanaians across the length and breadth of the country to actively participate in the activities marking this year’s NDC Month.
We particularly encourage comrades in all host towns and cities to fully mobilize and support these events to ensure their success. Let us approach this period with discipline, unity, patriotism and a renewed sense of purpose.
As a Party founded on the principles of social justice, accountability, probity, and the empowerment of ordinary people, the NDC remains committed to building a stronger Ghana where state institutions work effectively for all citizens and where governance remains transparent, responsive and inclusive.
Together, let us keep alive the spirit of June 4.
Together, let us deepen the Reset Agenda.
And together, let us continue working toward a more just, accountable and prosperous Ghana.
I thank you all.
