A/R: NAiMOS taskforce halts destruction of Cocoa farms by galamsey operators at Adanse Anomabo
The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Squadron (NAiMOS) has moved to protect cocoa plantations at Adanse Anomabo in the Bosome Freho District of the Ashanti Region following an intelligence-led operation to flush out illegal miners who had invaded farmlands.
The operation, carried out on Monday, December 8, was triggered by petitions from the local Cocoa Farmers Association after several farms came under severe threat from galamsey activities.
Upon reaching a site locally known as Kakra, the taskforce discovered extensive damage to cocoa plantations, destruction which had left farmers distressed and frustrated.
The illegal miners fled from the location as the team approached, abandoning their tools and operational equipment.
The taskforce subsequently destroyed the mining equipment left behind.
Six excavators found on the site were immobilised to prevent further use due to the unavailability of lowbed vehicles to transport them away.
The team also seized a pump-action gun and seven cartridges discovered at the location.
As part of the operation, makeshift structures believed to be hideouts for the miners were demolished and set ablaze, while several pipe hoses used for mining activities were also burnt.
The NAiMOS action is expected to bring relief to affected farmers as authorities continue efforts to clamp down on illegal mining in cocoa-growing communities across the country.
