Asanko Gold confirms fatality after unrest at Mpatoam concession

Asanko Gold Ghana Limited has confirmed that one person has died and heavy equipment belonging to contractors has been damaged following a violent confrontation between security personnel and community members near its Mpatoam concession on Tuesday, September 9.
According to a company statement, the incident stemmed from escalating tensions between residents and the military, which has been deployed as part of a state-mandated security intervention coordinated through the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
The unrest reportedly culminated in an attack on military camps and an invasion of the company’s operational areas.
“We share in the community’s grief over the tragic loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families during this difficult time,” the company said.
Asanko noted that it is collaborating with government officials, local authorities, and traditional leaders to restore calm and ensure a full investigation into the events.
Management also emphasised its commitment to maintaining dialogue with all stakeholders.
Further details are expected once investigations are concluded, the company concluded.
