Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has hailed the passage of the Legal Education Act, 2026 (Act 1170), describing it as a landmark reform that has the potential to reshape legal training and expand opportunities for aspiring lawyers in Ghana.

The legislation, which was approved by Parliament in March and subsequently assented to by President John Dramani Mahama last month, is expected to improve access to legal education while enhancing the quality and relevance of professional legal training.

Addressing a colloquium on legal education reform under the theme, “Implementing the Legal Education Act 2026: Institutional Readiness, Accreditation and the Future of Legal Training,” the Chief Justice called for stronger collaboration among universities, law faculties and other stakeholders to ensure legal scholarship contributes meaningfully to addressing national development challenges.

He urged institutions offering legal education to take proactive steps toward implementing the reforms, stressing that success would depend largely on their preparedness to meet the new standards and expectations established under the Act.

According to him, the focus should not merely be on regulatory compliance but on building robust governance structures capable of safeguarding academic excellence and professional integrity.

“The key issue before us is whether our institutions are truly prepared for this transition. Readiness must go beyond symbolism and reflect concrete measures that uphold quality, accountability and academic standards,” he stated.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie further emphasized the need for significant investment in modern learning infrastructure, including technologically equipped moot courts, digital learning platforms and other practical training facilities.

He noted that such investments would be critical to equipping future lawyers with the knowledge, skills and practical experience required to thrive under Ghana's evolving legal education framework.
