Death toll rises to 12 in El-Wak armed forces recruitment stampede, report says
The total number of people who have died after a stampede at El-Wak sports stadium has risen to 12.
Another round of the 2025/2026 Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise began today, Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the stadium in Accra. The original deadline was October 31, but a week's extension had been announced over technical challenges on the online application portal.
Initially, the GAF reported six potential recruits dead, with many injured, who were receiving emergency treatment at the nearby 37 Military Hospital. However, Channel One TV subsequently noted six more dead.
GAF said the stampede was triggered by a surge of applicants who breached security protocols, rushing to the gates before the scheduled commencement of the exercise. Thousands of youth turned up for military enlistment.
An in-depth investigation is to be launched into the tragic incident.

The dead have been taken to the hospital's morgue, while the injured receive treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
