The Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with national security and intelligence agencies, has rolled out a comprehensive contingency framework to address emerging security risks and potential humanitarian challenges along Ghana’s eastern corridor.

Deputy Minister of Defence, Mr Ernest Brogya Genfi, disclosed this in a statement on the floor of Parliament, saying the initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen national security and safeguard the country’s territorial integrity.

According to him, the framework focuses on key operational measures, including intensified joint border patrols, humanitarian preparedness, and enhanced civil-military coordination.

“We are taking proactive steps to secure Ghana’s borders, protect our citizens, and ensure that any humanitarian situations that may arise are managed in line with international standards,” Mr Genfi stated.

He noted that the Ghana Armed Forces, in partnership with other security services, have intensified joint patrols along the Ghana-Togo border to prevent infiltration, illegal crossings, and territorial encroachment.

As part of the plan, humanitarian logistics have been prepositioned at designated reception centres to ensure a rapid and organised response to possible refugee inflows.

The Ministry is also working closely with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and other partners to ensure that any displaced persons are properly registered, screened, and cared for according to humanitarian protocols.

Mr Genfi emphasised that troops deployed to the area have been given clear and measured instructions — to exercise maximum restraint and to engage only in response to direct and imminent threats.

In addition, the Ghana Armed Forces are deepening community engagement efforts across border districts to build public trust, counter misinformation, and enhance cooperation with local residents.

These community outreach activities include education campaigns in local languages, designed to help residents understand the purpose and scope of the military deployment while fostering transparency and collaboration.

“Our objective is to maintain peace and stability while ensuring that our actions are fully understood and supported by the people,” the Deputy Minister added.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining Ghana’s sovereignty and national security, stressing that the Ministry of Defence remains alert and ready to respond to any emerging challenges that may threaten the peace of the Republic.
