The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has advised the public to prepare for increased and more intense rainfall over the coming weeks as the country enters the peak of the rainy season.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, May 23, Joseph Tetteh Portuphy, GMet's Deputy Director in charge of Forecasting, stated that recent downpours are only the initial stage of a more severe rainy period projected to peak by June.

Portuphy attributed these changing weather patterns partly to climate change, pointing out that Ghana experienced an unusually weak Harmattan season this year without its typical hazy and cold conditions.

Portuphy urged residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to take early precautions, including temporary relocation, to ensure safety as the heavier rains approach.

The agency's warning follows a heavy downpour on Friday, May 22, which caused widespread flooding across several communities in the Greater Accra Region. The rainfall submerged homes, displaced residents, destroyed household property, and disrupted vehicular and pedestrian movement.

An on-the-scene assessment by Citi News confirmed severe inundation in Alajo, where numerous residents were displaced from their homes.

Other affected areas included Mallam, Baah Yard, SCC, and Dansoman, where waterlogged roads caused significant traffic gridlock and left motorists stranded on major transport routes.
