The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinpaor, has described the delivery of locally produced Jubilee crude oil to the Sentuo Oil Refinery in Tema as a major milestone in Ghana’s petroleum sector, signalling progress in the country’s drive toward value addition and energy self-reliance.

According to the Minister, the development reflects government’s commitment to processing more of Ghana’s natural resources locally in order to strengthen energy security and retain greater economic value within the domestic economy.

He noted that the initiative forms part of the broader vision of President John Dramani Mahama to deepen local participation and promote industrial development within the petroleum value chain.

The latest delivery of Jubilee crude oil to Sentuo follows earlier efforts to refine Ghanaian crude locally, including the supply of oil from the TEN Fields to the Tema Oil Refinery in 2016.

The Minister said this demonstrates continued progress in integrating upstream crude production with domestic refining capacity.

The Sentuo Oil Refinery has in recent years emerged as an important player in Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry, complementing the operations of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).

Officials confirmed that TOR is also currently refining crude oil following the receipt of one million barrels, a development expected to further boost local refining output and reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported petroleum products.

Energy sector stakeholders say the coordinated operations between Sentuo and TOR represent a strengthening of Ghana’s refining infrastructure and a step toward a more resilient energy system.

The Minister further emphasized that the achievement was made possible through collaboration between government, industry stakeholders, and petroleum partners, describing it as a shared commitment to advancing Ghana’s energy and industrial transformation agenda.

He added that continued investments in local refining capacity will play a critical role in creating jobs, improving efficiency in the downstream sector, and positioning Ghana as a regional hub for petroleum processing.
