Broadcaster Charles Akrofi has attributed the growing number of Ghanaians ending up in dangerous situations abroad to youth unemployment and the activities of what he described as human trafficking syndicates posing as travel and tour agencies.

His comments follow Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa's disclosure that about 55 of the approximately 272 Ghanaians recruited since 2022 to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war have been killed while two others are being held as prisoners of war. 

The minister said some of the victims were lured through deceptive employment schemes before being deployed to the conflict.

Speaking on “A Piece of My Mind” segment on the Class Morning Show, Akrofi lamented the limited employment opportunities in Ghana, saying many young people leave the country in search of better prospects.

He also argued that the system favours people with political connections and those from affluent backgrounds, leaving many others frustrated.

According to him, the situation has led to the emergence of dubious travel and tour operators that are, in reality, human trafficking syndicates.

"At the end of the day, it comes back to the old thing of what we're talking about. The frustration the system has created for the people. The youth are increasingly becoming frustrated. And in their frustration, these travel and tour agencies are taking advantage of them."

"Who is checking these travel and tour agencies?” Akrofi questioned, urging law enforcement and security agencies to intensify scrutiny of travel and tour operators to curb the activities of human trafficking networks.
