King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini has underscored the need for a harmonious relationship between traditional leadership and modern governance, rather than a rivalry between the two systems.

Speaking at the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi on Tuesday, the Eswatini monarch highlighted the growing challenges traditional institutions face in a rapidly globalising world dominated by Western democratic models.

He urged traditional leaders across Africa to innovate and reposition themselves as key players in the continent’s future.

“Our traditions define Africa’s unique identity,” the King noted, “but we must also reflect critically on practices that may no longer serve the best interests of our societies.”

He also spotlighted the critical role of women in traditional governance, praising the contributions of Ghana’s Queen Mothers and the Queen Mother of Eswatini, who holds a central role in his country’s leadership structure.

King Mswati III said his visit to Ghana was aimed at deepening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Eswatini and Ghana, particularly with the Ashanti Kingdom.

He called on African governments to support initiatives that merge tradition with innovation, promoting knowledge exchange between countries.

“We would like to see more Ghanaians visit Eswatini and more of our people experience Ghana,” he said, adding that such exchanges will foster stronger cultural and diplomatic ties.

Welcoming the King, President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, emphasised the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s cultural identity. He called for the integration of cultural education into the national curriculum to ensure the younger generation remains connected to the country’s heritage.

Ogyeahoho expressed optimism that the royal visit would further cement cultural ties between Ghana and Eswatini, describing it as a milestone in strengthening intercontinental unity rooted in shared values and traditions.
