The Management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in the Greater Accra Region has announced plans to carry out a mass burial of unclaimed, unknown, and unidentified bodies currently at its mortuary due to severe congestion.

In a public notice dated Monday, December 22, 2025, the hospital explained that the KBTH Mortuary has reached full capacity, making it necessary to take urgent measures to decongest the facility.

According to the statement, relatives, next of kin, or any individuals with an interest in bodies deposited at the mortuary are required to contact the hospital’s management within twenty-one (21) days of the notice.

This means all concerned persons must come forward on or before January 18, 2026, to make the necessary arrangements for the retrieval and burial of their deceased relatives.

Management disclosed that approximately 320 unclaimed bodies are expected to be included in the planned mass burial exercise.

Any bodies that remain unclaimed after the stated deadline will be buried in line with approved procedures and relevant regulations.

The mass burial exercise will be conducted in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to ensure compliance with public health and administrative requirements.

Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital management appealed to the general public for understanding and cooperation, stressing that the decision has been taken in the interest of public health, safety, and the effective management of hospital facilities.

The notice was officially issued and signed by the Management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, reaffirming the hospital’s commitment to handling the process with dignity and in accordance with the law.
