NSA identifies NPP's prodigality with GHS100m Happy Project, explores remedy

The Acting Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Mr Felix Gyamfi, has disclosed funds allocated for the crop component of the government's special initiative known as the Happy Project cannot be accounted for.
During a visit to the NSA's farmland in Kumawu, Ashanti Region, Mr Gyamfi, accompanied by his two deputies, stated although the funds were utilised, nothing was harvested from the land.
In 2023, the government allocated a sum of money to the NSA for agricultural activities through this special initiative, Happy Project.
Mr Gyamfi explained the NSA acquired 20,000 acres of land in Kumawu and began developing it after receiving a GHS100 million seed money along with GHS3.5 million for the Happy Project.
He emphasised while the portion of the funds intended for crop production was spent, no harvest was yielded from the land, calling the situation alarming and concerning.
Mr Gyamfi assured he and his deputies were committed to changing the narrative and transforming the NSA into an institution focused not only on posting to institutions but also on agro-business.
He announced plans to utilise 4,000 acres of land at Kumawu for maize farming during the major season, and another 4,000 acres for soybeans during the minor season.
Also, about 500 acres in Ejura, 2,050 acres in Amantin, 200 acres at Valley View University, approximately 1,000 acres in the Volta region and others will be used for other agricultural activities.
Mr Gyamfi emphasised the funding for these projects would not only come from the NSA but also from partnerships with organisations willing to collaborate, adding the NSA aimed to reduce food imports and create meaningful job opportunities for the said communities.
He, therefore, called on organisations and individuals interested in partnering with the NSA in farming initiatives to join the authority in its efforts to ensure an abundant food supply and lessen import dependence.
