More than 4,000 illicit weapons have been surrendered and destroyed under a national arms amnesty programme, Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has revealed.

Speaking during Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang's visit to the Ministry of the Interior, the minister said the exercise was carried out in collaboration with the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

He said the amnesty encouraged individuals to voluntarily surrender illegal firearms while law enforcement agencies also seized additional weapons.

According to the minister, the weapons were publicly destroyed at the Police Depot last week.

"People surrendered over 4,000 arms. Last week, on Thursday, we were able to meet at the Police Depot and publicly destroy these illicit arms, those that were seized and those that were voluntarily surrendered," he said.

He noted that the initiative forms part of efforts to address the proliferation of illegal firearms across the country.
