Seidu Agongo pledges full medical support for assaulted CMG journalist
Founder of the Class Media Group (CMG), Alhaji Seidu Agongo, has strongly condemned the alleged assault of a CMG journalist, Samuel Addo, by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.
Reacting to the incident in a statement after meeting with the assaulted journalist in his office, Alhaji Agongo expressed deep concern over what he called a gross abuse of authority by uniformed officers whose mandate is to protect lives and property.
He said the conduct captured in videos circulating on social media undermines the discipline and integrity expected of a security institution in a democratic society.
According to him, the footage showing firefighters allegedly attacking an unarmed journalist in the line of duty is “despicable” and has no place in a country that prides itself on the rule of law and press freedom.
Alhaji Agongo assured the assaulted journalist of the company’s full support, stating that Class Media Group will provide the best possible medical care and legal assistance to ensure justice is served.
He stressed that the media house will pursue the matter until those responsible are held accountable.
He also commended fellow media organisations and members of the public who have spoken out against the incident, noting that their support reinforces the collective resolve to defend press freedom in Ghana.
While expressing disappointment over what he described as the silence of the leadership of the Ghana National Fire Service, Alhaji Agongo said he remains confident in the Ghana Police Service to conduct a fair and impartial investigation.
He has therefore called on the police to urgently investigate the incident and publicly bring the perpetrators to justice, stressing that the matter goes beyond one journalist and touches on the fundamental rights of all citizens and Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of media freedom.
