Six drivers arrested as Accra Mayor leads evening taskforce against unapproved transport fares
Six commercial drivers were arrested on Wednesday evening during a special enforcement operation led by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, aimed at curbing the charging of unapproved transport fares within the metropolis.
The exercise, which commenced at about 5:30 p.m., covered sections of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue in Accra’s Central Business District, starting from the COCOBOD area and ending near the Farisco traffic light.
The area was selected due to the heavy rush-hour traffic and the high number of commuters travelling to destinations such as Kaneshie, Awoshie, Kasoa and Lapaz.
Leading the taskforce on foot through congested traffic, the Mayor and his team stopped trotros and other commercial vehicles to verify fares being charged.
Drivers were questioned, while passengers on board were also engaged to confirm whether the amounts demanded aligned with the officially approved transport fares.
The operation revealed varying levels of compliance.
While some drivers adhered strictly to the approved rates, others were found charging slightly higher fares.
These violations resulted in the arrest of six drivers for flouting the approved fare structure.
According to the task force, the exercise forms part of ongoing efforts by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to protect commuters from exploitation and ensure strict adherence to transport regulations across the city.
