Two killed, four injured in fatal crash on Elubo–Takoradi Highway
Two people have been confirmed dead and four others injured after a head-on collision involving a tipper truck and a Nigerian passenger bus at Abease along the Elubo–Takoradi Highway.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the crash occurred on Friday and involved a Sinotruck (Howo) tipper truck with registration number GS 3789-24 and a Nigerian-registered passenger bus, AAA 449 YN from Lagos.
According to the Fire Service, personnel from the Elubo Fire Station responded swiftly after receiving a distress call at 11:53 a.m. A five-member rescue team, led by Assistant Divisional Officer II Clement Arthur with support from Assistant Divisional Officer I Issifu Dauda Kaku, arrived at the scene within six minutes.
By the time firefighters got to the crash site, three victims had already been rescued by bystanders. However, five passengers from the bus and the tipper truck's mate remained trapped in the mangled vehicles.
Firefighters successfully extricated the remaining victims and provided emergency assistance before transporting four injured persons to the Elubo Government Hospital for treatment.
The driver of the passenger bus was pronounced dead at the scene, while the tipper truck's mate later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Their bodies have been deposited at the hospital morgue pending further investigations.
Preliminary findings by the Ghana National Fire Service suggest the accident occurred after the bus driver reportedly attempted to avoid a pothole, causing the vehicle to cross into the path of the oncoming tipper truck, leading to the collision.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
