Ashanti Police arrest eight over alleged street gambling scam in Kumasi

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested eight persons for allegedly luring unsuspecting members of the public into fraudulent gambling activities and stealing their money and personal belongings.

According to the police, intelligence gathered on March 2, 2026, indicated that a group had assembled at Adehyeman in Kumasi to engage in illegal street gambling.

The suspects were said to be deceiving victims into participating in the game and subsequently stealing their cash and other valuables.

Acting on the information, officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate of the Regional Command were dispatched to the scene, where they arrested the suspects while they were actively engaged in the alleged criminal activity.

The suspects have been identified as Akwasi Atakari, 36; Mandela Peprah, 31; Ernest Oduro, 28; Joseph Odoom, 31; Augustine Agyemang, 24; Eric Addo, 33; Dorcas Atanga, 22; and Agnes Baser, 21.

Police retrieved a total of GHS15,260.00 from the suspects, believed to be proceeds from the alleged scam.

The money has been retained as evidence.

The suspects have been cautioned and their statements taken.

They are currently in police custody, assisting with further investigations and are expected to be arraigned before the court on March 3, 2026.

In a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Region, the Command cautioned the public to remain vigilant and avoid participating in street gambling or similar unsolicited games organised by unknown individuals.

The police further urged residents to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or call the emergency numbers 191 or 18555 for immediate assistance.
