The Ghana Police Service has re-arrested a suspect linked to the fatal shooting of a police officer at the Karimenga barrier in the Upper East Region.

In a statement, the Police indicated that personnel from the National Police Intelligence Directorate (NPID) in Accra, in collaboration with the Upper East Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, conducted a joint intelligence-led operation in the early hours of February 17, 2026.

The operation led to the arrest of Abdul-Aziz Iddrisu, also known as Baaluuse, aged 33, at his hideout in Polego, a suburb of Bolgatanga.

According to the Police, the suspect and accomplices currently at large have been on the wanted list for their alleged involvement in an attack on officers stationed at the Karimenga police barrier.

During the incident, G/Const. Seth Oppong Damoah was shot and killed, while G/Cpl. Nyanku Charles and G/Cpl. Abu Moro sustained severe injuries.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect is affiliated with one of the factions involved in the protracted Bawku conflict.

A search conducted on three mobile phones retrieved from him reportedly uncovered materials suggesting his involvement in the conflict, including multimedia content and communications allegedly linked to arms acquisition.

Police sources further indicated that information gathered points to the suspect and an accomplice identified only as Mark, who remains at large, as being connected to the alleged importation of weapons and ammunition into Bawku.

Investigators also allege that the suspect and his associates planned and executed the December 29, 2025 attack on officers performing lawful duties at the Karimenga barrier, after which he went into hiding until his arrest.

The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, while efforts are underway to apprehend other individuals believed to be connected to the case.

The Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to bringing all perpetrators involved in attacks on security personnel to justice.
