The Attorney-General says it is confident of overturning the Court of Appeal's acquittal of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Attionu Tamakloe, after directing the Director of Public Prosecutions to file an appeal at the Supreme Court.

Ms Tamakloe had faced 78 counts of offences, including conspiracy to steal, stealing, conspiracy to cause financial loss to the state, causing financial loss to the state, causing loss to public property, improper payment of public funds, unauthorised commitments resulting in financial obligations to government, money laundering, and breaches of the Public Procurement Act.

She was tried and convicted in absentia by the High Court (Financial Division 2), presided over by Justice Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe, and sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment.

The Attorney-General's office noted that the Republic had already opposed her appeal at the Court of Appeal, filing written submissions arguing that it lacked merit and should be dismissed. Despite that outcome, the office has now moved swiftly to challenge the decision at the highest court.

Along with the notice of appeal, the Director of Public Prosecutions has been directed to apply for a stay of execution of the judgment, pending the Supreme Court's determination of the case.

In a statement announcing the appeal, the Attorney-General's office said: "The Attorney-General remains committed to the due process of law and is confident that the appeal before the Supreme Court will succeed."

ATTORNEY GENERAL TO APPEAL DECISION OF THE COURT OF APPEAL IN REPUBLIC V. SEDINA TAMAKLOE

The attention of the Attorney-General has been drawn to the decision of the Court of Appeal acquitting the former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance

and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Ms. Sedina Attionu Tamakloe, of all the charges brought against her.

Ms. Tamakloe was charged with seventy-eight (78) counts of various offences, including conspiracy to steal, stealing, conspiracy to cause financial loss to the

State, causing financial loss to the State, causing loss to public property, improper payment of public funds, unauthorized commitments resulting in financial obligations to the Government, money laundering, and breaches of the Public Procurement Act.

She was tried and convicted in absentia by the High Court (Financial Division 2), presided over by Her Ladyship Justice Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe, JA, sitting as an additional High Court Judge. Upon her conviction, she was sentenced to ten (10) years’ imprisonment.

The Republic opposed the appeal by filing written submissions, contending that the appeal lacked merit and ought to be dismissed.

Having received notice of the Court of Appeal’s decision, the Attorney-General has directed the Director of Public Prosecutions to immediately file a notice of appeal to the Supreme Court, together with an application for a stay of execution of the judgment pending the determination of the appeal.

The Attorney-General remains committed to the due process of law and is confident that the appeal before the Supreme Court will succeed.
