A Kpando Circuit Court has sentenced a 31-year-old woman to three years' imprisonment for abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.

The Volta North Regional Police Command, in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, identified the convict as Stella Amedzorme.

According to the police, the incident was reported on July 17, 2026, after the child's mother, Gloria Xagbe, 21, told officers she had briefly left her eight-month-old son in the care of Amedzorme, a fellow market trader, while she went to buy packaging bags.

When she returned, both the woman and the baby had disappeared.

The police said intelligence-led investigations led to Amedzorme's arrest on July 18 at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, where the baby was rescued unharmed.

During investigations, the convict admitted taking the child on the instructions of her fiancé, who remains on the run.

Police said Amedzorme was first arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20 and remanded into custody. She reappeared before the court on August 3, pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to three years' imprisonment.

The police said efforts are ongoing to arrest the convict's fiancé to assist with investigations.

The Volta North Regional Police Command assured the public of its commitment to protecting lives, especially children, and urged parents and guardians to be cautious when leaving their children in the care of others.
