A Science teacher at St. John’s Catholic B Basic School at Agona in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality of the Central Region was allegedly assaulted by a former pupil who recently completed the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The victim, Madam Matilda Mensah, was reportedly attacked by James Mensah on Friday, May 22, 2026, in a JHS 2 classroom.

According to a statement signed by KEEA Municipal GNAT Secretary, Julius Kpodo, the incident was first brought to the attention of the KEEA Municipal Chairman, Henry Amartey, who informed the GNAT leadership early Friday morning.

GNAT officials, including the Municipal Chairman and the Agona Circuit COHBS Chairman, Francis Henry Hinankwa-Fosu, subsequently visited the school and engaged the teachers to gather details about the incident.

The statement said James Mensah and three other former students had initially visited the school canteen where Madam Matilda Mensah was present.

It explained that James Mensah allegedly touched the teacher’s hair from behind after approaching her at the canteen. The teacher reportedly cautioned him and later moved to the JHS 2 classroom.

However, at about 11:30 a.m., the suspect allegedly returned to the school and followed the teacher into the classroom while she was teaching.

“While Madam Matilda was writing on the board, she sensed someone standing behind her. Upon turning around, she realised it was James Mensah,” the statement said.

According to the account, the teacher instructed him to leave the classroom, but he refused and allegedly engaged in a struggle with her.

The statement further alleged that when the teacher attempted to drive him away with a cane, the suspect overpowered her, held her by the neck, pushed her against the wall and fled the scene.

The incident was reported to the police.

GNAT also alleged that on Saturday, May 23, 2026, the suspect and some unidentified individuals reportedly went to the teacher’s residence and issued threats.

The statement quoted the group as allegedly saying, “This is where Madam stays,” and “If she fools, we will rape her.”

According to GNAT, the threats heightened fear and insecurity for the victim and staff of the school.

The Association said officials later visited the residence of the suspect and engaged his mother, who reportedly claimed she was unaware of the incident and any police complaint against her son.

The statement added that after obtaining the suspect’s contact number, the KEEA Municipal Chairman contacted him and he was later apprehended after a struggle.

“He was subsequently handed over to the police and finally placed in police custody,” the statement noted.

GNAT assured members that due process would be followed and that the suspect would be arraigned before court.

The Association also appealed to members to remain calm while leadership pursued justice for the teacher.

KEEA GNAT further called on the police to handle the matter swiftly and professionally while assuring teachers of the Association’s support.
