The Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof Ahmed Jinapor-Abdulai, has announced that the Commission has put measures in place to fast-track the accreditation of proposed Post-Basic Specialised Training Programmes under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as the Mahama Cares Initiative.

Prof Jinapor-Abdulai made this known on Monday, 2 February 2026, during a courtesy call on the Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&MC), Mrs. Philomina A. N. Woolley, at her office in Accra.

The visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between GTEC and the N&MC to ensure the timely accreditation of the specialised programmes.

The GTEC Director-General was accompanied by the Director for Accreditation, Mr. Saaka Sayuti; the Head of Legal, Mr. Felix Awuah; the Head of Accreditation for the Nursing and Allied Health Department, Mrs. Abena Asafu-Adjaye Nkrumah; and the Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Mr. Charles Mbeah.

Mrs. Woolley welcomed the delegation, describing the visit as a privilege and noting that it was the Director-General’s first official visit to her office.

She informed the team that five nursing and midwifery institutions have been selected to run specialised degree programmes under the initiative.

These institutions are the Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC), Tamale; the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Nursing School, Kumasi; NMTC Kumasi; NMTC Korle-Bu; and the Peri-Operative and Critical Care Nursing School (PON/CCN), Korle-Bu.

According to the Registrar, the selected institutions will offer degree programmes in Emergency Nursing, Cardiology Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Endocrinology Nursing, Nephrology Nursing, and Oncology Nursing.

Prof Jinapor-Abdulai commended Mrs. Woolley for her leadership and dedication to the regulation of nursing and midwifery education in Ghana.

He assured her of GTEC’s full support to ensure that the specialised programmes are accredited within the shortest possible time, in line with the objectives of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.
