Govt pays over 50000 teachers all salaries and arrears from Jan 1 this year
The Controller and Accountant-General's Department (CAGD) says it has paid the promotion salary adjustments and arrears owed to teachers in the country.
It could be recalled that the teachers were recently on nationwide strike demanding better conditions of service including the payment of their salaries and arrears.
This action called for a stakeholder meeting which saw the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, promising to ensure the teachers are given what is due them by the end of October this year.
An October 16 deadline was agreed upon for the payment of the salaries and arrears as well as ensuring other related benefits.
According to a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations at the Controller and Accountant-General's Department, 56,003 teachers of the Ghana Education Service have received their payments.
"Of this number, 49,725 received their payments on 15 October 2026, together with their October salaries. These payments covered salary adjustments and arrears from 1 January 2026. A further 6,278 teachers were paid in September 2026. The payments were completed ahead of the 16 October 2026 deadline between Government representatives and teacher unions at a meeting held at the Ministry of Education on 2 October 2026."
The Controller and Accountant-General also clarified issues regarding a number of the teachers who were not convered under this arrangement.
"Of the reported 80,000 promoted teachers, GES processed and submitted supporting documents for 56,633. CAGD verified and paid 56,003, while 630 cases remain pending due to issues identified during the verification process by the CAGD. CAGD awaits the resolution of these issues by GES for the payments to be effected. The remaining 23,367 teachers are yet to be processed and relevant documents submitted by GES," a part of the release said.
The department says it has "completed payment for all teachers whose submitted records met the payroll requirements".
