Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang says a teacher's influence on a child can last a lifetime, and the enormous responsibility placed on teachers must be matched with practical support from the state.

She said this when she participated in the 2026 Ghana Teacher Prize on Monday, October 5, an event organised by the Ministry of Education through the National Teaching Council to recognise outstanding teachers.

According to the Vice President, teaching carries enormous responsibility for care, integrity and sound professional conduct.

She noted that government is taking steps to reflect that value in its policies.

"A teacher’s influence on a child can last a lifetime. The responsibility we place on teachers must be matched by practical support," Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated.

She disclosed that government is investing in school infrastructure and educational resources, while also working to improve teachers' welfare through targeted interventions.

"The Teacher Dabrɛ Initiative seeks to improve accommodation, particularly for teachers serving in underserved communities. We are also working to ease the pressures of double-track schooling and resolve administrative challenges affecting teacher placement, promotions and remuneration," she stated.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further stressed the need for classrooms to evolve to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world.

"The world our children are growing into is changing rapidly, and our classrooms must evolve with it. Teachers must therefore have access to continuous professional development, appropriate technology and the tools required to prepare learners for the realities of the future," she said.

Touching on concerns raised by teacher unions, the Vice President assured that government is engaging stakeholders to address them.

"Government also acknowledges the concerns teachers have raised. These matters are being discussed between Government and the unions. Building the education system we want requires us all to continue working together in the interest of our children."

The veep extended her congratulations to all award recipients and expressed appreciation to teachers across the country.

"I extend my warmest congratulations to all the award recipients and my appreciation to teachers across Ghana who continue to serve, often in demanding circumstances," she said.
