President John Dramani Mahama has announced a GH¢100 million allocation for Ghana’s 10 Technical Universities in the 2027 budget to support infrastructure, innovation and skills development.

Under the arrangement, each institution is expected to receive GH¢10 million.

The President made the announcement on Tuesday, May 26, during the opening of the 2026 Applied Research Conference of Technical Universities of Ghana (ARCTUG 2026) at Takoradi Technical University.

He said the allocation forms part of government’s plans to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and position technical universities to support industrialisation and economic transformation.

President Mahama noted that 2026 marks 10 years since polytechnics in Ghana were converted into technical universities and stressed the need to adequately resource the institutions to enable them to carry out their mandate effectively.

According to him, technical universities play a key role in training the skilled workforce needed for innovation, entrepreneurship and industrial development.

The President, together with Vice-Chancellors of the 10 Technical Universities, also toured research exhibitions and innovative projects displayed by students and lecturers before officially opening the conference.

ARCTUG, organised under the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana, is held every two years and brings together policymakers, academics, industry players and development partners to discuss applied research and innovation.

This year’s conference, hosted by Takoradi Technical University, is expected to feature more than 276 research paper presentations from participants in Ghana and other countries.

Speaking on the conference theme, “Advancing TVET for Innovation, Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development,” the Vice-Chancellor of Takoradi Technical University, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, called for increased investment and institutional support for technical universities.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu also assured participants of government’s commitment to providing adequate funding for TVET education.
