The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, is challenging a recent High Court ruling that prevents him from performing his duties.

The injunction was granted after a lawsuit was filed by John Mevemeo, who claims the renewal of Prof. Boampong’s contract was unlawful.

Prof. Boampong, appointed in 2020 for an initial three-year term, saw his contract renewed by the university's governing council before its expiration in July 2023, granting him another three years in office.

However, Mr. Mevemeo argues that the extension breaches the university's statutes and the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, as it would extend Prof. Boampong's tenure beyond his retirement date in 2025.

On Wednesday, 4 September 2024, the High Court approved Mevemeo's application for an injunction, temporarily barring Prof. Boampong from his role pending a final ruling.

In response, Prof. Boampong has appealed the decision, stating that the judge’s ruling was erroneous and warning that the injunction could disrupt the university's operations.
