Defence Minister donates food items to Ghana Armed Forces to help address food crisis

The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, is set to donate essential food items to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as part of efforts to address an inherited food supply crisis.
The donation, scheduled for this morning, includes 1,000 bags of rice, thousands of tins of mackerel, tomato paste, and cooking oil.
According to Dr. Boamah, this immediate intervention is part of a broader three-pronged strategy to resolve the acute food shortages affecting the military.
He highlighted that the government inherited a GH¢275 million debt owed to food suppliers, which has contributed to the crisis.
Beyond the donation, the Defence Minister assured that the government is committed to clearing outstanding debts owed to food suppliers.
He noted that once Parliament approves the 2025 budget, the Finance Minister will immediately implement a payment plan to settle the arrears while ensuring that future financial obligations are met on time.
Additionally, the government plans to collaborate with the private sector to roll out mechanized agriculture initiatives aimed at boosting local food production.
Dr. Boamah emphasized that this long-term approach will help the Armed Forces become more self-sufficient, reduce the government’s food expenditure, and contribute to stabilizing food prices.
“We are resetting the Ghana Armed Forces,” he declared, reaffirming the government's commitment to improving conditions for military personnel.
