E/R: Seven-year-old drowns in galamsey pit at Akyem Abomosu; authorities launch clampdown on illegal mining

A tragic incident has struck the community of Akyem Abomosu in the Atiwa West District, as a seven-year-old boy lost his life after drowning in an abandoned illegal mining pit.
According to eyewitnesses, the child accidentally slipped and fell into the water-filled pit and, despite frantic rescue efforts by residents, could not be saved.
The heartbreaking incident has sparked swift action from authorities, with the Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund, Dr. Hannah Bissiw, leading an intensive operation to clamp down on illegal mining activities in the area.
In an interview with Accra FM/CTV News reporter Apelete Kofi-Michel, the District Chief Executive, Mr Amo Johnson Anom, condemned the ongoing illegal mining operations and stressed that the Assembly would not tolerate such acts.
“This tragic loss of a young life is a wake-up call,” he said.
“Illegal mining must stop, and this operation is a clear warning to those engaged in it. We will ensure full compliance with mining regulations, and offenders will face the full force of the law.”
Mr. Amo Johnson further appealed to traditional leaders and residents, including chiefs, queen mothers, and opinion leaders, to rally behind the government’s efforts to protect the environment and secure the future of the community.
He underscored the importance of unity in the fight against illegal mining, adding that the district's development and the safety of its people depend on collective action.
Equipment seized during the operation has been handed over to the Kwabeng Police Station for further investigation.
