GA/R: Tema railway workers decry harsh conditions amid ongoing nationwide strike

As the nationwide strike by workers of the Ghana Railway Company Limited continues, staff at the Tema Railway Station are voicing growing frustration over deteriorating working conditions and a lack of basic operational resources.
Workers at the station say their plight has worsened, with no electricity, limited access to water, and even a shortage of simple security essentials like padlocks to secure facilities after working hours.
Speaking to reporter Rebecca Lartey, Mr. Kwasi Antwi, a security officer at the station, described the situation as dire, noting that workers have gone over seven months without salaries.
He said these challenges are severely hampering their ability to perform their duties and affecting their families' well-being.
“Our working environment is unbearable. We don’t even have light or water, and the station can't be locked properly at night because we don't have padlocks.
We’re just managing to hold on,” Mr. Antwi lamented.
He emphasised that while the staff are willing to return to work, they are demanding firm commitments and swift intervention from the highest levels of government to resolve their grievances.
The workers' strike, which began over salary arrears and worsening conditions of service, has stalled operations across the country’s rail network.
Calls are mounting for government action to prevent a total collapse of the railway sector
