Health workers at Akoti Health Centre threaten to withdraw services after violent attack
Fear and anxiety have engulfed health workers at the Akoti Health Centre in Assin Wurakese, within the Assin Fosu Municipality of the Central Region, following a violent attack on a patient by armed individuals who stormed the facility.
The incident followed a clash involving a man identified as Yaw Buabeng and a couple, during which both sides allegedly inflicted cutlass wounds on one another.
One of the victims, identified as Daniel, who suffered severe injuries to his arm, was the first to arrive at the health centre to seek urgent medical care.
Moments later, Yaw Buabeng, who had sustained serious injuries to his head and hand, also rushed to the facility for treatment.
However, while nurses were attending to him, a group of about ten young men, reportedly armed with machetes, sticks and clubs, forcefully entered the health centre and attacked Buabeng, beating him into a coma.
The brazen assault caused panic among the health workers, forcing nurses to flee the facility for their safety and temporarily abandon their posts.
Following the incident, health officials at the centre have called for a thorough police investigation and the immediate arrest of those responsible.
They warned that failure to ensure the safety of staff could compel them to seek transfers, citing serious security threats at the facility.
The case has since been reported to the Assin Fosu District Police Command for investigation.
In response, a police team led by District Commander ASP Jacob Kumdzro, accompanied by the Assin Fosu Municipal Health Director, Mr. Benjamin Amoakoh, visited the facility to assess the situation and reassure staff of improved security.
The team pledged to strengthen police presence at the health centre to prevent a recurrence.
Speaking to Rich FM’s Kwame Owusu Asante Shadrack, the Divisional Police Commander, ACP Dr. Asare Nyarkoh, said the police are engaging community leaders to educate residents on the dangers of violence and lawlessness.
He further disclosed that Yaw Buabeng, the key suspect in the initial altercation, is currently receiving treatment at St. Francis Hospital under police guard, and appealed to the public to remain calm as investigations continue.
