The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund(GMTF), Adwoa Oboubia Darko-Opoku, has called for increased investment in the fight against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), describing them as a growing public health and economic challenge during the Ghana–UK Investment Summit 2026.

The summit, which brought together government officials, investors, private sector leaders, and development partners, served as a platform to explore opportunities for economic growth, innovation, and cross-border collaboration aimed at advancing shared prosperity.

Speaking at the forum, Ms Darko-Opoku stressed the urgent need to prioritise investment in healthcare systems that address the rising burden of NCDs such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer, which she said continue to place significant strain on individuals, families, and national health systems.

She noted that beyond the health implications, NCDs also have far-reaching economic consequences, affecting productivity, increasing healthcare costs, and slowing national development.

Through the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, she said, government is implementing a transformative national response aimed at strengthening the country’s capacity to manage and prevent NCDs.

Key interventions include expanding access to treatment, enhancing specialist medical training, supporting research initiatives, and reducing financial barriers that limit access to essential healthcare services.

Ms Darko-Opoku further indicated that strategic partnerships with investors and development stakeholders would be crucial in accelerating progress, particularly in scaling up infrastructure and improving the quality and reach of specialised care across the country.

She expressed optimism that ongoing engagements at the summit would help mobilise resources and foster collaborations capable of driving long-term improvements in Ghana’s healthcare delivery system.

According to her, strengthening the response to NCDs is central to building a healthier, more productive, and more prosperous Ghana, and requires sustained commitment from both public and private sector actors.
