Ghana to end import of vaccines through new Vax and Pharma Ghana project
The Government of Ghana, in Partnership with the World Health Organisation and the European Union, have taken a strategic initiative to boost the local production of vaccines and essential medicines through the new Vax Pharma-Ghana project, intending to reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imports.
Vaccine is one of the most important tools of prevention; therefore, to ensure that vaccines reach all the people in the Country, the Government is collaborating with the WHO and the European Union to produce vaccines in Ghana.
Dr Angela Ackon, WHO Ghana Technical Officer, in charge of Integrated Service Delivery in a presentation, expressed this view at the launch of the Vax Pharma Project.
She explained how the Vax Pharma Project is going to help solve frequent stockouts of essential medicines and vaccines in the country.
She brought out the project timeline, which is going to take two years.
According to her, the first year is going to start with i. Access to the clinical landscape and the development of strategic plans. And also to leverage the opportunity for MRNA technology transfer for Ghana.
The second year, she said, will start with i. Identification of GMP-compliant technology transfer manufacturing partners.
The expectations for the project were to enhance regulatory compliance and global competitiveness.
