The Eastern Regional Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has partnered the Kwasi Nyantakyi Foundation and other stakeholders to register inmates of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The outreach programme brought together a wide range of partners, including the Joana Gyan Foundation, the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and its President, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku.

Also present were football legends Abedi Ayew “Pele”, Samuel Osei Kuffour, Anthony Baffoe, and several entertainment personalities including Grace Ashley, Patapaa, Stay Jay, and Dr Cryme.

The exercise formed part of efforts to expand healthcare access to vulnerable and underserved populations, including prison inmates, in line with Ghana’s broader commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Through the initiative, inmates who were previously not enrolled in the NHIS were successfully registered and issued with membership cards, enabling them to access healthcare services within the scheme.

Speaking during the programme, the Eastern Regional Operations Manager of the NHIA, Daniel Fuseini, emphasized the importance of health insurance coverage and reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to ensuring inclusive access to essential healthcare services.

He educated inmates on the benefits of the NHIS and encouraged them to keep their memberships active to ensure continuous access to healthcare.

Officials of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison expressed appreciation to the NHIA and its partners for the intervention, describing it as a significant step toward improving healthcare delivery within the facility.

They noted that the registration exercise would help enhance the health and wellbeing of inmates and strengthen healthcare access in the prison environment.

The programme also featured health education sessions and stakeholder engagements aimed at promoting health equity and social inclusion.

The NHIA Eastern Regional Office reiterated its commitment to collaborating with both public and private partners to expand NHIS coverage and improve access to quality healthcare services across the region.
