The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) says comedian Michael Blackson's claims about the treatment of his late mother at the facility contain "numerous inaccuracies," rejecting allegations that its staff were incompetent and motivated by money.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, UGMC addressed Blackson's accusations, saying they did not accurately reflect the care provided to his 83-year-old mother, who was admitted to the facility from May 27 to July 16, 2026.

The response follows a post by Blackson on X, in which he wrote: "To the University of Ghana Medical hospital where my mom suffered the last month of her life, I'll like to tell you in my opinion that you are the worst hospital in Ghana. Your staff, meaning nurses and doctors, have no clue what they are doing and the only thing your hospital cares about is collecting money."

UGMC expressed condolences to Blackson and his family, acknowledging the loss of his mother, who died at the centre on July 16.

"UGMC values every patient's and family's experience and considers all feedback, whether positive or critical, as important to improving the quality of care we provide," the statement said.

The hospital said it had taken the concerns seriously and reviewed them "thoroughly, fairly and objectively" through its clinical and administrative processes.

However, it stated: "We wish to state unequivocally that the facts presented by Mr. Blackson on social media contain numerous inaccuracies and do not accurately reflect the events that transpired in the provision of medical care."

UGMC said it would not publicly disclose details of the patient's diagnosis, treatment or medical records, citing its ethical obligation to protect patient confidentiality even after death.

It also rejected suggestions that financial considerations influenced clinical care.

"Our billing and financial processes are transparent, strictly governed by institutional policies and operate independently of clinical decision-making," the statement said.

The hospital added that all clinical decisions are made by qualified healthcare professionals in accordance with established standards of care and in consultation with authorised family representatives where necessary.

UGMC said it was prepared to engage directly and privately with Blackson's family through the appropriate channels and pledged to investigate any specific allegations of staff misconduct.

The hospital also encouraged members of the public with concerns about their experience at the facility to contact its Client Services team for review.

Reacting to the hospital's statement, Blackson accused UGMC of refusing to accept responsibility for what happened to his mother.

"Once again they refuse to take accountability, they mentioned my mom's age as if she was old enough to be dead. My grandma lived over 93 and my great grandmother was 112. Just admit your staff has no clue what they are doing in that brand new beautiful building. In those few weeks I paid enough to cover your staff for a year and you failed," he wrote on X.

Blackson has also been sharing a series of private messages he says were sent to him by sympathisers who alleged that they had experienced similar negligence at UGMC, resulting in the suffering and deaths of their loved ones. UGMC has not publicly responded to those claims.
