Asantehene advocates social contract over political dependence for development
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for a paradigm shift in the approach to development in the Ashanti Region, urging a move away from reliance on politicians toward a social contract model.
Speaking during a meeting with the World Bank Vice President for Western and Central Africa, the Asantehene stressed the importance of robust infrastructure as a cornerstone for sustainable progress.
“In terms of development, if we have the infrastructure, everything will be fine,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stated, highlighting the critical role of foundational structures in fostering growth.
The Asantehene expressed dissatisfaction with the current dependence on political leaders to drive development.
“I cannot depend on the politicians for my development.
I don’t want to depend on them, so let’s have a social contract, and then we do it,” he said.
His comments underscore the need for communities, private entities, and international partners to collaborate and take proactive steps in addressing developmental challenges, complementing the efforts of government institutions.
The Asantehene’s remarks have sparked discussions about the potential for community-driven initiatives and public-private partnerships to accelerate development in the Ashanti Region.
