The Bawku Traditional Council, led by Bawku Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, has formally submitted a petition to the Government of Ghana calling for the creation of a new region to serve the Kusal Traditional Area.

The petition, which seeks to promote administrative efficiency, equitable development, and local empowerment, was presented to the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Akamugri Donatus Atanga, during a brief ceremony in Bolgatanga on Friday.

The Bawku Naba’s delegation included Alhaji Azonko Mahamudu, Chief of the Gumbo Divisional Area; Alhaji Osman Kasim, Chief in Charge of Environment; and Mr. John Abugre, a member of the Kusaug Advisory Council.

In presenting the petition, the delegation emphasised that the proposed region would help accelerate socio-economic development, improve infrastructure and public services, and deepen local governance within the Kusal area.

He further noted that the population growth and expanding administrative demands in the Bawku enclave justify the need for a dedicated regional administration.

Regional Minister Mr Akamugri Donatus Atanga received the petition on behalf of the government and commended the Bawku Traditional Council for following the constitutional and peaceful process in making their request.

He assured the delegation that the petition would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for consideration.

The call for the creation of a new region forms part of broader efforts across Ghana to enhance decentralisation and ensure that development reaches every community, especially in areas with unique cultural and administrative identities.
