Fuel was ₵14 per gallon in 2016, now costs over ₵70 under NPP – Mahama
John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to lead a government committed to stabilising Ghana’s economy and reversing the sharp increases in the cost of living under the current administration.
In a Facebook post, the former president expressed concern over rising prices of essential products such as fuel, food, and building materials, pledging to work hard to make these goods more affordable if elected in the upcoming general election.
"I am committed to leading a team that will stabilise and transform the economy. This transformation will stop the daily increases in the price of essential products such as fuel, food, and general goods and bring prices down," Mr. Mahama stated.
Citing the rising cost of living under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, Mr. Mahama drew comparisons between his previous tenure in office and the current state of affairs.
He highlighted the price of cement, which he noted was GHS25 during his presidency, but now exceeds GHS100.
“When the NDC was in office, a bag of cement cost GHS25, but now it is more than GHS100. Fuel cost GHS14 per gallon in 2016, but the NPP said it was too expensive. Today, a gallon costs more than GHS70
"That is why we will work hard to stabilise the economy so that the prices of goods and services will be reduced and things will be more affordable for the people,” he explained.
Mahama also criticised the economic management of the current administration, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, arguing that their policies have disproportionately affected rural communities.
He assured rural dwellers that an NDC government under his leadership would ease their financial burden.
“Akufo-Addo and Bawumia's destruction of the economy has badly affected rural dwellers, but they can be assured that the next Mahama government will lessen their financial burden,” Mr. Mahama asserted.
