Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency Mustapha Gbande says President John Dramani Mahama has never publicly declared that he is not interested in seeking a third term in office, arguing that such a decision ultimately rests with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on Joy Prime's morning show on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Gbande questioned claims that the President had ruled out the possibility of another presidential bid, maintaining that no such public declaration had been made.

"Where did Mahama say he is not interested in a third term?" he asked.

Gbande stressed that President Mahama's political journey has always been shaped by the party, insisting that the NDC determines the direction of its leadership.

"The President didn't make himself; the party made him," he said.

He further explained that while Mahama remains the leader of the NDC, decisions of such magnitude are taken collectively between the party and its leader.

"We control Mahama. He's our leader; he's the leader of the party. What the party says, plus what he thinks, is what takes place," Gbande stated.

His remarks are expected to reignite public discussions over the possibility of President Mahama going for another term despite ongoing debate over the constitutional and political implications of such a move.

Although speculation about Mahama's political future has persisted in recent months, the President has not formally announced any intention to seek a third term.

Gbande's comments underscore the NDC's position that major political decisions are made through consultation between the party and its leadership, rather than by the President acting alone.
