Minority protests 'insensitive' comments over death of Akwatia MP

Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has voiced strong disappointment over what he describes as the insensitive handling of the death of Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, by the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga.
In an interaction with the media, Mr Shaib condemned Ayariga for allegedly prioritising political interests over mourning a colleague, criticising the Majority Leader’s push for a by-election as “unfair” and “beneath the dignity of the House.”
The controversy erupted after Mr Ayariga reportedly suggested that the late MP’s widow was already involved in political campaigning—a remark Mr Shaib found particularly distasteful.
“It is deeply hurtful and shows a lack of empathy,” Mr Shaib said. “At a time when we should be united in grief, such comments only serve to deepen divisions.”
In response to what they described as a disregard for the solemnity of the moment, the Minority staged a walkout in Parliament.
They accused the Majority of showing more interest in initiating a by-election than respecting the memory of their fallen colleague.
Mr Shaib called on lawmakers to set aside partisanship in moments of tragedy, urging compassion, unity, and respect as the House mourns.
