NDC marks 34 years of political history and democratic governance
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is celebrating its 34th anniversary today, marking more than three decades of political participation, democratic governance, and national development since its establishment in 1992.
Founded on June 10, 1992, the NDC emerged as one of Ghana’s leading political parties following the country’s return to constitutional rule under the Fourth Republic.
Over the years, the party has played a significant role in shaping Ghana’s democratic landscape, producing several governments and contributing to key policy and development initiatives across the country.
The party traces its roots to the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) administration led by former President Jerry John Rawlings, who later became the NDC’s first presidential candidate and led the party to victory in the 1992 and 1996 general elections.
Since its formation, the NDC has produced three presidents: Jerry John Rawlings, John Evans Atta Mills, and John Dramani Mahama.
The party has also maintained a strong presence in Parliament and local governance structures across the country.
As the party commemorates its 34th anniversary, members and supporters are reflecting on its journey, achievements, and contributions to Ghana’s democratic development.
Party faithful have highlighted the NDC’s role in expanding infrastructure, education, healthcare, social intervention programmes, and economic reforms during its periods in government.
The anniversary comes at a time when the party is in government under President Mahama, following its return to power after the 2024 general elections.
Party leaders have described the milestone as an opportunity to renew their commitment to the NDC’s founding principles of social justice, accountability, inclusiveness, and national development.
Across the country, supporters are expected to mark the occasion with messages of solidarity, community engagements, and reflections on the party’s history and future aspirations.
The 34th anniversary serves as a reminder of the NDC’s enduring role in Ghana’s political evolution and its continued influence in shaping the nation’s democratic and development agenda.
