NPP MPs seek action against Kennedy Agyapong over Afari Hospital comments
Five Members of Parliament on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health have petitioned the Minority Leadership in Parliament over comments made by former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, regarding their recent visit to the Afari Military Hospital.
The petition, dated June 18, 2026, was addressed to the Minority Leadership and copied to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, the General Secretary, and the Council of Elders.
According to the MPs, they visited the Afari Military Hospital on June 10, 2026, with the express approval of the Minority Leadership to ascertain the status of the facility amid healthcare concerns in the Ashanti Region, particularly challenges facing the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The MPs said military personnel prevented their delegation from entering the facility during the visit, leading to a scuffle that attracted public attention and condemnation.
They further stated that following the incident, Kennedy Agyapong publicly criticised the visit and made claims which, in their view, contradicted known facts regarding the status and operational readiness of the hospital.
The petitioners argued that the visit was neither unilateral nor unauthorised, stating that the Minority Leader, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip were informed and had approved the exercise.
They contended that it was inappropriate for Mr Agyapong to publicly criticise a decision that had been sanctioned by the Minority Leadership.
The MPs also maintained that the visit was a collective undertaking carried out in the public interest and in furtherance of the objectives of the party. They described Mr Agyapong's public criticism as regrettable and potentially harmful to party unity and credibility.
The petition warned that failure to address the matter could weaken the authority of the Minority Leadership, encourage indiscipline within the party and undermine the NPP's electoral prospects in 2028.
According to the MPs, public attention had shifted away from concerns surrounding the Afari Military Hospital visit and towards what they described as unnecessary internal disagreements within the party.
The petition called on the Minority Leadership to publicly rebuke Mr Agyapong for remarks and conduct they said had the potential to undermine the collective efforts and image of the Minority Caucus.
The MPs also urged the leadership to refer the matter to the appropriate organs of the party for engagement and guidance to prevent a recurrence and maintain party unity, discipline and cohesion.
The petition was signed by Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, Ranking Member of the Health Committee and MP for Effiduase Asokore; Dr Patrick Boachie Yiadom, MP for Obuasi East; Dr Kingsley Agyemang, MP for Abuakwa South; Alexander Akwasi Acquah, MP for Akim Oda; and Frank Yeboah, MP for Atwima Nwabiagya North.
